Abstract
This study examined how the level of experience with hate speech against older people online/offline affects discrimination against them, focusing on the mediating effect of the perceived stigma on them. Data from the ¡°Survey on hate and discrimination against older people conducted with 600 adults ages 20 and 59¡± was analyzed with Process Macro¡¯s Model 4. The results are as follows: (1) The degree to which non-elderly people have encountered anti-senior expressions online or offline is positively related to the act of discrimination against older people. In other words, the more exposure non-elderly had with hate expressions against the elderly, the more severely they discriminated the elderly. (2) Both online and offline, ¡®perceived stigma on older people¡¯ mediates the relation between the experience of expressing hatred of older people and discriminatory behavior against them.
With such findings, this paper proves its hypothesis that experience with hate expressions against the elderly can formulate stigma against senior citizens in those exposed to the language and that the stigma can in turn, brew discrimination. (3) In online, the relation between the experience of hate speech and the discrimination against older people was established only through the perceived stigma on older people. It was found that exposure to hate expressions online does not lead to discriminatory behavior right away, but that recognition of the elderly as a stigma serves as an important medium leading to such behaviors. (4) In offline, the experience of hatred expression against older people had a significant effect on the discrimination against them regardless of the mediating effect of the perceived stigma. This shows that there is a higher chance of discrimination against the elderly in those exposed to hate expressions against the elderly offline than those exposed to those online. Based on these results, this study explores the mechanism behind the discriminatory behavior of older people and suggests how to reduce this discriminatory behavior.
